Almost nobody says "fourteen thirty" out loud in casual conversation, yet plenty of scheduling and payroll software stores every punch that way internally. The reason is simple: 24-hour time cannot be misheard or mistyped into the wrong half of the day the way "12:30" can.
Every other hour converts by simple arithmetic, but 12 AM and 12 PM don't follow the "subtract 12" shortcut, because 12 is already a 12-hour-clock number pretending to be something else. Midnight, the instant a new day starts, is 12:00 AM and 0000. Noon is 12:00 PM and 1200. There's no formula for these two; you either know them or you look them up, which is exactly what trips up more schedules than any other part of this conversion.

From 0000 to 1159 it's morning, no adjustment needed except for that one midnight exception above. From 1300 onward, subtract 12: 1430 minus 12 hours is 2:30, so it reads 2:30 PM. Minutes never change in either direction, only the hour and the AM/PM tag move. Going the other way, add 12 to any PM hour: 7:45 PM becomes 1945.
Hospitals, the military and aviation run on 24-hour time for the same reason payroll sometimes does under the hood: a missed AM or PM on a schedule can shift a shift by 12 hours, and 24-hour time removes that failure mode entirely. When someone reads a 24-hour time aloud, they read the digits, not a clock face: 1500 is "fifteen hundred," 0930 is "oh nine thirty," and nobody tacks "o'clock" onto the end.
Leading zeros matter on paper: write 0700, not 700. And while some schedules use 2400 to mark the tail end of a day, writing 0000 for the start of the next one is the clearer, unambiguous choice, and it's what this converter always returns.
Here is the conversion this tool does most in practice. A hospital time card shows an in-punch of 2330 and an out-punch of 0745. Run each through the converter: 2330 is 11:30 PM, because 23 minus 12 leaves 11 and the minutes ride along untouched. 0745 sits below 1200, so no arithmetic at all: 7:45 AM. Now the shift reads 11:30 PM to 7:45 AM in plain English, and the fact that it crossed midnight is suddenly visible in a way two four-digit numbers never made obvious. The edge cases are worth spelling out because they are exactly where hand conversion goes wrong. Enter 0007 and the tool returns 12:07 AM, not 0:07, because the 12-hour clock has no zero hour; the zero becomes a 12 with AM attached. Enter 12:45 AM going the other direction and it returns 0045, since midnight's hour is 0 in 24-hour notation. Type a three-digit time like 745 and it quietly pads to 0745 before converting. And a 24-hour entry above 2359 gets rejected rather than guessed at, which is the correct behavior for a payroll number: better no answer than a wrong one twelve hours off.
Plenty of workplaces post schedules in 12-hour time but store punches in 24-hour form, so the mismatch usually surfaces when someone audits their own hours for the first time. A nurse scheduled "7 to 7:30" works 0700 to 1930 on the record. If she reads 1930 as 7:30 and then can't tell which 7:30, the whole audit stalls on format instead of substance. Converting every punch to one format first, either one, is the step that makes the later math checkable.
