Why "5 to 7 business days" is really two dates, not one

A shipping estimate quoted as a range needs two separate calculations, not one. Run this tool in add mode with 5, then again with 7, and you get the earliest and latest dates a shipment window actually spans, holidays included if you tick that box.

The counting convention: "between" mode excludes the start date and includes the end date, the same convention shipping estimates and legal deadlines use.

The eleven days that come off the calendar

The federal holiday calendar set by law has eleven fixed dates. When one lands on a Saturday, it's observed the Friday before; a Sunday holiday is observed the following Monday. This tool applies that observed-date rule automatically whenever the holiday box is ticked.

Two weeks is not always 10 business days

A 2-week notice period reliably contains 10 weekdays only when no observed holiday falls inside it. Add a Thanksgiving or a Christmas to the span, tick the holiday box, and the same two calendar weeks yields 9 business days instead of 10. This is exactly the kind of gap that catches people off guard around November and December deadlines.

What the tool does not know about

Only the eleven federal holidays are built into this calculator. A company floating holiday, a state-only holiday, or a regional observance is not in that set, and if one of those falls inside your range, you'd need to subtract it by hand. For a full year or month's worth of business days as a planning figure, most years hold 260 to 262 weekdays total, and the federal set removes roughly 11 more from that, landing near 249 to 251 working days, though the exact number shifts depending on which day of the week January 1 falls on.

Five business days across Thanksgiving, counted out loud

Here is the calculator's add mode doing its worst-case work. Start on Wednesday, November 25, 2026 and add 5 business days with the holiday box ticked. Thursday the 26th is Thanksgiving, skipped. Friday the 27th is day one. Saturday and Sunday don't count. Monday the 30th is day two, then December 1, 2, and 3 finish the count. The answer lands on Thursday, December 3, 2026, a full eight calendar days after the start. Untick the holiday box and the same input lands a day earlier. That one-checkbox difference is the entire gap between "5 business days" as a shipper counts it and as a calendar counts it.

When July 4 falls on a Saturday

In 2026, Independence Day lands on a Saturday, so the federal observance moves to Friday, July 3, and that Friday is the day this calculator removes when holidays are on. The same shift happens in reverse for Sunday holidays, observed the following Monday. It changes results in ways that surprise people: a holiday can knock out a business day even though the holiday itself sits on a weekend that was never going to count.

The June example on this page, rechecked with holidays on

The count of 21 business days between June 1 and June 30, 2026 quoted at the top of this page excludes weekends only. Tick the holiday box and it drops to 20, because Juneteenth falls on Friday, June 19 in 2026, a weekday that would otherwise have counted. A one-day slip like that is invisible until a payment or a filing shows up late, which is the argument for running any June, July, November, or December deadline through this tool twice, once with each setting, and seeing whether the answer moves.

FAQs

A shipping estimate says "5 to 7 business days." How do I find the actual delivery window?

Use add mode twice: once with 5 business days from your order date, once with 7, to get the earliest and latest expected delivery dates. Tick the holiday box if the window crosses a federal holiday.

Why did my count come out one day different from what I expected?

Between-mode counting excludes the start date and includes the end date, the convention used for deadlines and shipping. If you expected both dates counted, or neither, the result will look off by exactly one day.

My company gives a floating holiday not on the federal list. Can this tool account for that?

No, only the eleven US federal holidays are built in. A company floating holiday, or a state-only holiday, needs to be subtracted manually from the result if it falls inside your range.

How does the tool handle a federal holiday that lands on a Saturday?

It shifts to the observed date under the standard federal rule: a Saturday holiday is observed the preceding Friday, and a Sunday holiday is observed the following Monday, and the tool skips whichever day is actually observed.

Is a 2-week notice period the same as 10 business days?

Only if neither of the two weekends inside it contains an observed holiday and the period starts and ends on a weekday. Two calendar weeks reliably contains 10 weekdays, but a holiday inside that span would reduce the business-day count if you're also excluding holidays.
